Maria, 39, legislative analyst for the city of Los AngelesDaughter: Arianna, 7 To hear Ben Rountree tell it, that first year as Arianna’s at-home parent was like taking a speed-reading course in a foreign language. Rountree, who in his former working life was an independent music producer and songwriter, immersed himself in What to Expect the First Year, treating the book like an instruction manual, and never missed an installment of Dr. Brazelton’s show on the Learning Channel. He made frequent long-distance phone calls to both his mother and his mother-in-law with questions about things his baby daughter was — or wasn’t — doing. And then there was Katie — his wife’s sister, who lived nearby and who had given birth to her first child the day before Maria did. For instance, “I didn’t take Arianna out for months because none of my so-called experts happened to mention it,” Rountree exclaims. I was sure she’d wriggle out of her carrier, fall, and crack her head. This year alone he started three extracurricular art classes as well as computer, chess, and journalism clubs.

The theme of the show, which pitted stay-at-home dads vs. The first audience question—which was more like an outlandish statement than a question—came from a mother who said she would never leave her daughter alone with a dad at a playdate. She was afraid that a man helping her child in the bathroom would not be able to control himself.

As crazy as this woman sounded, it made me think: Based on my Bethenny experience, here are five misconceptions about stay-at-home dads: We were not talking about dropping your child off with a stranger, or even with a father you had talked to only a couple times after school. The audience member was right about kids sometimes needing the utmost level of trust. I sincerely thank them.

When we both worked, a large chunk of his salary went to pay for the caregiver who always left the house picked up and did the laundry. I miss when we paid a caregiver who picked up the house and did our laundry.

Take a chill pill and be thankful that I have such a loving husband who is great with kids? They are 6, 3, and 20 months. Suck it up and pick up the house myself?

Growing Number of Dads Home with the Kids Biggest increase among those caring for family By Gretchen Livingston The number of fathers who do not work outside the home has risen markedly in recent years, up to 2 million in The number of fathers who are at home with their children for any reason has nearly doubled since , when 1.

Since that time, the number has fallen slightly, driven mainly by declines in unemployment, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of U. A rise in the number of stay-at-home fathers is occurring side by side with another important parenting trend of the past half century: This report, however, focuses directly on the vast majority of fathers with children under the age of 18 who are living with at least one of those children.

Whites are significantly more likely than blacks and Hispanics to be living with their children. Fathers with higher levels of education are also more likely than less educated dads to be living with their kids. As is the case among mothers, stay-at-home fathers are less well-off financially and have lower educational attainment than their working counterparts. Stay-at-home fathers also tend to be older than stay-at-home mothers, which may partially explain why so many are home due to illness or disability.

The public is largely supportive of the idea of mothers staying at home with their children, but they place less value on having a stay-at-home father. There are many potential reasons why more fathers with young children are at home these days. A Pew Research Center survey found that working fathers with children under age 18 are just as likely as working mothers to say that it is difficult for them to balance the responsibilities of their job with the responsibilities of their family.

I had an older brother and sister 12 and 15 years my senior respectively, parents who were happy together, and my aunt and cousins lived one street over. I had a lot of attention growing up being the baby and all, but my main source of affection came from my Dad. To define our relationship like that would misconstrue it; we were simpatico. Our father-daughter relationship was more like a typical father-son relationship. My mom hated seafood so we would often go get fish together and make fun of people at work, school, etc.

My dad is tremendously funny and a phenomenal story teller. I think I always had a high bar when it came to dating because my dad really had it all; he was tall, dark, and handsome, educated, successful, ethical, funny, athletic, and handy. He was the standard. I was an awkward and creative kid. I wore the same pair of vans tennis shoes to school for 5 years straight, had long un-brushed hair, and wore oversized sweatshirts and jean shorts to school.

Name some nerdy quality and I probably had it. I was naturally a very inclusive person.

It has attracted considerable attention from a local and vocal online expat community, which is often quick to bristle at any Western actor on TV, let alone one playing a fresh-off-the-boat type. His high school in Slough had a sister school in Japan that sent several students to England every year, but not the other way around.

That is until Fox broke new ground. Fox then went into the video game industry and ended up in Singapore in , where he fell in love with stand-up comedy.
